What Is Ad Podding? FAST Ad Pods Explained

Ad podding packs multiple ads into one FAST channel break. Learn how pods work with SSAI, why slot length changes fill, and how operators set load.

Ad podding is the practice of grouping several commercials into a single break inside a FAST channel stream. Instead of one lone spot between programs, a pod might hold four 30-second ads in a 120-second window. Server-side ad insertion stitches that whole block into the HLS stream so the viewer stays in one continuous playback session.

If you operate a FAST channel, pod design is a revenue lever and a retention lever at the same time. Slot length, pod count, and hourly ad load decide how much inventory you offer and how often viewers sit through a break. Get those wrong and you either leave money unfilled or train people to change the channel.

What is an ad pod in FAST?

An ad pod is one break opportunity filled with one or more creatives, played back to back. The schedule (or the ad server) declares how long the window lasts. The ad stack then tries to fill that window with sold inventory.

In linear FAST, a typical hour might look like this:

Hourly ad loadPods per hourExample pod length
4 to 5 minutes3 to 460 to 90 seconds
6 to 7 minutes4 to 590 to 120 seconds
8 minutes5 to 690 to 120 seconds

These ranges match common FAST practice of roughly 4 to 8 minutes of ads per hour, lighter than cable's historical 12 to 16. Treat them as operator planning bands, not audited industry rules. Channel genre, fill rate, and retention all shift what "works."

Pod structure is not only total minutes. A 120-second pod can be two :60s, four :30s, or a mix with :15s. Shorter slots often clear more demand because more buyers can afford a short unit. Longer creatives can clear higher CPMs when demand is strong. Model both with the free ad pod calculator.

How does SSAI fill a pod?

When a break fires, SSAI does not invent ads. It asks an ad server for decisions, usually over VAST, then stitches the winning creatives into the stream for that viewer session.

The loop in plain terms:

  1. Playout marks the break. Your schedule defines where the pod starts and how long it runs. Markers such as SCTE-35 cues carry that contract into the stream.
  2. SSAI requests fill. The inserter calls your demand stack for ads that fit the remaining window.
  3. Creatives are selected. Responses may include wrappers, multiple media files, and tracking URLs. SSAI follows the chain until it has playable ads or gives up on a slot.
  4. The pod is stitched. Ad segments replace the break window in the personalized HLS manifest. Beacons fire as playback crosses start and quartile points.

Unfilled time inside a pod is a fill-rate problem, not a mystery. Demand may be thin, floors too high, creatives not ready, or the declared duration mismatched to what buyers can sell. See ad fill optimization for the waterfall levers.

Why pod design changes revenue and retention

Podding sits between editorial taste and ad ops math.

Too many pods. Viewers learn the rhythm and leave before the next break. Session length drops, and you serve fewer total impressions even if fill looks fine on paper.

Too few pods, oversized windows. A four-minute mid-roll can feel like a commercial block from cable. Completion rates suffer when the break feels endless.

Slot length vs demand. New channels with thin demand often do better with more :15 and :30 slots than with scarce :60 inventory. Mature channels with strong direct or PMP demand can sell longer units.

Competitive separation. Buyers care whether two rivals sit in the same pod. Platforms and ad servers enforce category rules; operators still feel the effect when fill drops because a rule blocked a bidder.

For the broader buying path (programmatic vs direct, measurement, household targeting), read CTV advertising explained. For placement craft (where breaks land in the schedule, marker discipline, retention checks), use designing ad breaks for FAST channels.

How should you measure whether a pod plan works?

Do not judge a break map by CPM alone. Track a small set of paired metrics for two weeks after any change:

MetricWhat it tells you
Fill rate by pod lengthWhether demand can clear :15/:30/:60 slots you offer
Completion rateWhether viewers stay through the block
Average session lengthWhether heavier load is costing tune-away
Impressions per viewer-hourCombined effect of load, fill, and session length

A higher ad load that tanks session length can reduce total impressions. A lighter load with higher fill can earn more. Vendor CPM decks that ignore fill and retention are incomplete. Published FAST CPM bands in seller materials often sit around $15 to $25 programmatic. Treat those as benchmarks, not your measured yield.

When a pod underperforms, change one variable at a time: slot mix, pod count, or daypart load. Parallel changes make the cause impossible to read.

What do FAST operators control on a managed platform?

On Vidiyo you set break policy and schedule content. Playout emits cues, SSAI fills pods, and analytics report impressions against those breaks. You do not hand-edit VAST XML for every viewer.

What still rewards operator attention:

  • Hourly ad load and pods per hour
  • Pod duration honesty (declared length must match the real window)
  • Genre and metadata accuracy so demand can target the inventory
  • Retention checks after any load change

If you are still choosing a launch path, start with how to start a FAST channel or create a channel.

Quick answers

What is ad podding? It is packing multiple ads into one break window so SSAI can stitch a continuous commercial block into the FAST stream.

What is the difference between ad load and a pod? Ad load is total ad minutes per hour. A pod is one break that holds some of those minutes as one or more creatives.

How long should a FAST ad pod be? Many operators run 60 to 120 second pods inside a 4 to 8 minute hourly load. Start light on a new channel and add only when retention holds.

Do I need to build podding myself? No on a managed SSAI platform. You set break policy; the playout and ad stack construct and fill the pods.
