You can legally watch thousands of movies online for free. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, and YouTube all run licensed, ad-supported movie libraries that cost nothing. No subscription, no credit card, no trial that quietly converts to a charge. Public library apps like Kanopy and Hoopla add a second route: free movies with no ads at all, using a library card.

These services are free because advertisers pay instead of you. The industry calls the model FAST, but you do not need the jargon to use it. This guide covers where to watch, what each service does best, and what the free experience is actually like.

Where can you watch free movies legally?

Seven options cover almost everything worth knowing.

Tubi has the deepest free movie library in the US. It leans into genre depth: horror, thrillers, action, Black cinema, and cult films that paid services skip. Tubi passed 100 million monthly active users in 2025, per Fox. No account is required to press play.

Pluto TV splits its catalog between on-demand movies and live movie channels. The on-demand side is solid; the live side is where Pluto shines, with channels dedicated to single genres running around the clock.

The Roku Channel works on Roku devices, mobile, and the web. It mixes studio-licensed films with free live channels. You do not need to own a Roku device to use it.

Samsung TV Plus comes preloaded on Samsung TVs and Galaxy phones, with a web player too. Samsung reported 100 million-plus monthly active users entering 2026. Its movie selection rotates monthly.

YouTube has a free-with-ads movies section stocked by the studios themselves. It is easy to miss and worth checking. Skip the pirated uploads; the official section is labeled.

Plex offers free ad-supported movies and live channels alongside its media-server roots. The catalog overlaps heavily with Tubi and Pluto but surfaces different picks.

Kanopy and Hoopla are the quiet winners. Both connect to your public library card and stream films with zero ads, including festival and criterion-quality titles. The catch is a monthly borrow limit set by your library.

One service you can drop from your list: Amazon shut down Freevee in 2025 and folded its catalog into Prime Video's ad-supported tier.

What is the free movie experience actually like?

Expect ads, older titles, and a rotating catalog. None of those are dealbreakers once you know the shape of the trade.

Ads. Free streaming typically runs 4 to 8 minutes of ads per hour, versus cable's 12 to 16. That is an industry norm, not a guarantee, and movie ad breaks land at natural scene changes more often than they used to. Two-thirds of US viewers say they would rather save money than avoid ads, per Hub Entertainment Research in 2025. More context lives in our industry statistics hub.

Catalog depth versus paid. Free services carry deep back catalogs, not this month's theatrical releases. A movie usually hits paid rental first, then a subscription service, then free streaming. If you want a film that came out eight weeks ago, free services will frustrate you. If you want ten thousand older films across every genre, they will not.

Rotation. Licenses expire. A movie on Tubi in July may be gone in September, sometimes reappearing on Pluto or Plex. Watchlists help, but do not treat any free catalog as permanent.

Quality. HD is standard. 4K is rare on free tiers. For most movies on most screens, you will not notice.

Movie channels you can flip to

On-demand browsing causes decision fatigue. The free services solved this with live, linear movie channels: pick one and let it play.

Pluto TV runs dozens of them, from action to westerns to holiday films, each looping a genre 24/7. The Roku Channel and Samsung TV Plus carry similar lineups of single-genre movie channels. Flipping through them feels like cable without the bill, and it is often the fastest way to find something watchable.

Our guide to free live TV online covers the full live-channel landscape, and Vidiyo's own program guide shows what is airing right now.

Where Vidiyo fits

Vidiyo is a free streaming platform for independent, creator-run TV channels. It does not carry Hollywood movie catalogs, and this guide will not pretend otherwise.

What it offers is different: 24/7 channels programmed by individual filmmakers, curators, and niche communities that the big free apps do not list. Independent film blocks, festival shorts, and creator-built genre channels play free in your web browser with no account and no download. If the licensed libraries all start to blur together, browsing the channel lineup is a different kind of discovery.

Quick answers

Is it actually legal to watch movies free on these services? Yes. Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, Plex, and YouTube's official movie section license their films and pay rights holders from ad revenue. Library apps are funded by your library. If a site streams brand-new theatrical releases free, it is not one of these.

Do I need an account to watch? Usually not. Tubi, Pluto TV, and YouTube play without sign-in. The Roku Channel's web player and Plex ask for a free account. Kanopy and Hoopla need a library card. Accounts add watchlists and resume, nothing more.

Why can't I find new releases? Movies move through paid windows first: theaters, rental, subscription. Free streaming is the last stop, usually months to years after release. The trade for zero dollars is patience.

Which service has the best free movie selection? Tubi, by most measures, especially for genre film. Pluto TV wins if you prefer live channels. Kanopy wins on quality-per-title if your library supports it. Checking two or three services takes minutes and costs nothing.
